How to Install Outside Mount Plantation Shutters

Outside-mount shutters are fixed to the wall or architrave around the opening, so careful frame positioning is essential before the first permanent fixing.

Preparation

Check that the finished frame dimensions match the intended opening and that the mounting surface is clear. Group the labelled frame and panel components for that window.

Outside frame assembly

1. Assemble the frame

Join the frame on a flat surface and keep the corners fully seated.

Positioning outside frame

2. Centre and level the frame

Hold the assembled frame over the opening. Check the top is level and the side margins are positioned as planned.

Fixing outside frame

3. Fix the top and establish square

Use initial fixings to support the frame without fully tightening every point. Measure diagonals or use a square to establish the frame geometry.

4. Fix the sides and bottom

Work around the frame gradually. Pack behind low spots so the wall or architrave does not distort the frame.

Finished outside mount

5. Hang the panels

Fit panels to their labelled hinge positions and test movement.

6. Fine-tune

Adjust frame packing or hinge alignment until panel gaps are even and the panels close cleanly.

7. Finish

Fit cover caps or strips, remove protective material and test the louvres and underlying window.
